Xavier Community School gespot by satellite! From February 2014 till February 2024. What a journey!

Gespot op google anno 2024: Xavier Community School op de Linda Farm in Livingstone, Zambia. De sateliet heeft nu ook de school gevonden. Vanuit de ruimte te zien.

Ooit, 12 jaar geleden, begon het, vanachter een gordijn gespannen tussen twee huisjes,  met 5 leerlingen, een hele toegewijde teacher, haar naam is Bridget. En een hele enthousiaste, betrokken assistent to the teacher, Elidah. Op initiatief van Mr Thomas Chikanya, bewoner van de Linda Blind Farm, vader van een gezin en coordinator van de Farm in dienst van de ZAPD, een organisatie voor mensen met een beperking en tevens landeigenaar van de farm. Mr Thomas is inmiddels helaas verhuisd naar het Noorden. Bridget en Elidah zette zich twaalf jaar later nog steeds in voor de kinderen van de farm en uit de, verre, omgeving. Nu geen 5 kinderen meer maar bijna 250 kinderen tussen 3 en 12 jaar. Kinderen voor wie, zonder de Xavier Community School/Linda Blind Farm School, allerhoogstwaarschijnlijk onderwijs niet haalbaar zou zijn geweest.

Al heel snel haalde het succes de school in en moest er verhuisd worden. Een huisje op de Linda Blind Farm School werd vrijgemaakt en de volgende pre school was geboren. 80 kinderen, 2 teachers, Bridget en Juliet, en Elidah als assistent to the teacher, elke dag op amper 4×4 m2. Geen tafels, geen stoelen.

Deze pre school was al uit haar jasje gegroeid voordat ze geopend was.

In febuari/ maart 2014, nu 10 jaar geleden, werden de plannen gesmeed voor een echte pre school. Ik vond twee lokale samenwerkingspartners, Dream Livingstone Zambia met Rabeccah en Kennedy Mukumbo en de ZAPD met toen Mrs Jane en nog Mr Thomas. De handen werden ineen geslagen. Vele mensen boden hulp en op 8 augustus 2014 werd de echte pre school geopend met een prachtige openingsceremony. Drie echte, grote klaslokalen met magazijntjes en een echte speeltuin!

Maar de kinderen werden groter. Ze wilden heel graag naar een primary school. En opnieuw werden de handen ineen geslagen.

Een prachtige primary school voor de kinderen van grades 1 t/m 7 was het resultaat! 3 extra klaslokalen, een computerlokaal, een kleine bieb, een lerarenkamer en een headteacherskantoor! En er was nog ruimte voor de kers op de taart; een echt handwash bassin met schoon, stromend, (drink)water en 17 kranen op verschillende hoogten, een paar grote wasbakken en ook nog overdekt. Een geweldige openingsceremony gaf het officiële sein voor opening van de school die echter al anderhalf jaar ervoor in gebruik was genomen. Net voor corona-tijd. Een heel schoolteam onder leiding van de headteacher daarbij geholpen door de deputy teacher en ondersteund nog steeds door Elidah en ook door de, vrijwillige, conciërge David staan elke dag paraat als de kinderen ’s ochtends vroeg bij het ochtendgloren aan komen rennen. En teacher Bridget en assistent to the teacher Elidah? Ja inderdaad: zij zijn er nog steeds :).

Toen ik in februari 2014 de weg naar de Linda Blind Farm vroeg, keken mensen met stomverbaasd aan: wat moest die jongen nu op de Linda Blind Farm? En de weg ernaar toe.. die wist men ook niet echt. Ergens bij een grote, dikke boom nog maar eens vragen….

En nu… heeft de sateliet de school ook gespot. Vanuit het heelal staat de school en staat de Linda Blind Farm ook voortaan op de kaart :).

Twelve years ago, it all began behind a curtain stretched between two houses with just 5 very small students, one dedicated teacher named Bridget, and an enthusiastic assistant to the teacher, Elidah. This was initiated by Mr. Thomas Chikanya, a resident of Linda Blind Farm, a family man, and coordinator of the Farm on behalf of ZAPD, an organization for individuals with disabilities and also the landowner of the farm. Sadly, Mr. Thomas has since moved North. Twelve years on, Bridget and Elidah are still dedicating their efforts to the children of the farm and those from the surrounding areas. Now, it’s not just 5 children but nearly 250 children aged 3 to 12. For these children, without the Xavier Community School/Linda Blind Farm School, education would likely have been unattainable.

The school’s success quickly outpaced its capacity, necessitating a move. A cottage at the Linda Blind Farm School was repurposed, and thus, the next preschool was born. It catered to 80 children, with 2 teachers, Bridget and Juliet, and Elidah as the assistant, all in a space barely 16 square meters. They had no tables, no chairs.

This preschool had outgrown its capacity even before it opened.

In February/March 2014, now 10 years ago, plans were laid for a real preschool. I found two local partners, Dream Livingstone Zambia with Rabeccah and Kennedy Mukumbo, and ZAPD with at that time Mrs. Jane Munga and still Mr. Thomas. Together, we joined forces. Many people offered their help, and on August 8, 2014, the real preschool was inaugurated with a beautiful opening ceremony. Three proper, large classrooms with storage spaces and a real playground were unveiled!

But as the children grew, they aspired to attend a primary school. Once again, efforts were united.

The result was a beautiful primary school for children from grades 1 to 7! Three additional classrooms, a computer room, a small library, a teachers’ lounge, and a headteacher’s office! And there was even room for the icing on the cake: a real handwashing basin with clean, running (drinkable) water and 17 taps at various heights, a few large sinks, and it was all covered. A wonderful opening ceremony officially marked the opening of the school, which had actually been in use for a year and a half prior, just before the pandemic. A whole school team, led by the headteacher and assisted by the deputy teacher and still supported by Elidah, as well as the voluntary janitor David, are ready every day as the children come running at dawn. And teacher Bridget as assistent to the teacher Elidah: yes, they are still at school :). 

When I asked for directions to Linda Blind Farm in February 2014, people looked at me in utter amazement: What was that young man doing at Linda Blind Farm? And the way there… was also not well known. Perhaps try asking again near a large, thick tree…

And now… the satellite has also spotted the school. From outer space, the school and Linda Blind Farm are now forever on the map. 🙂
