Er is hard gewerkt op de Xavier Community School. Natuurlijk door de leerlingen, de teachers en de andere stafleden maar ook door mensen van de aannemer, John Muleya. Dit keer om de puntjes op de i te zetten bij de burglar bars (de deur- en raambeschermingen).

Het ministerie heeft eind 2023 de Xavier Community School nog een keer bezocht voor een extra inspectieronde. Speciaal omdat de school dit jaar voor het eerst examens af gaat nemen bij (de eerste) Grade 7-class. Zeg maar onze Groep 8 op de basisschool.

Er is een reglement waaraan scholen moeten voldoen om zelf examens af te mogen nemen. Een ervan is dat zo’n school een echte, grote, kluis moet hebben. Een soort “beveiligde inloop-kamer”. Dat wordt de “strong room’ genoemd.

De examens worden tijdens een examenperiode van de Strong Room van het Ministerie naar de Strong Room van de School gebracht en daar op geslagen tot gebruik. De door de kinderen ingevulde examens worden vervolgens in de Strong Room, veilig, opgeborgen tot ze, in een speciale kist, weer naar het Ministerie terug gebracht worden.

Bij de bouw van de primary school hebben we hier natuurlijk al rekening mee gehouden. Er is meteen een hele goede strong room gebouwd. Beveiligd met tralies (burglar bars) voor de ramen van het kantoor waar de strong room als aparte kluis is ingebouwd.

Iedereen natuurlijk heel blij toen de school ook het predikaat “examen centrum” ontving.  De examenkandidaten kunnen dan hun examens op de eigen school maken i.p.v. dat ze elke keer naar een van de andere scholen moeten lopen om daar hun examens te gaan maken. En dat betekent niet alleen dat je je examen maakt op een “vreemde” school te midden met kinderen die je niet kent maar ook dat je vaak veel verder moet lopen (en in December kan het heel erg warm zijn) en dus nog vroeger uit de veren.

Helaas bleek dat de tralies dikker moesten zijn dan ze waren en dat er ook een extra traliedeur voor de stalen deur van de strong room aangebracht moest worden. De klus is inmiddels geklaard. De Xavier Community School is klaar voor de examens van Grade 7 in December 2024!

En de examens moeten in solide transportkisten vervoerd worden van het Ministerie naar school en weer terug. En natuurlijk ook goed beveiligd en schoon opgeslagen worden. Daarvoor hebben we 1 transportkist gekocht bij een plaatselijke winkel en hebben we 1 ijzeren kist laten maken bij een plaatselijk lasbedrijf. Dat ging helaas even mis want de eerste kist was wel heeel groot maar daar werd het snijapparaat ingezet en probleem opgelost ;). De Xavier Community School en Grade 7 zijn er klaar voor!

Hard work is underway at the Xavier Community School. Of course, by the students, the teachers, and the other staff members, but also by people from the contractor, John Muleya. This time to put the finishing touches on the burglar bars (door and window protections).

The Ministry paid another visit to the Xavier Community School at the end of 2023 for an additional inspection round. Especially because this year the school will be conducting exams for the first time with the Grade 7 class. 

There are regulations that schools must meet up to, to be allowed to conduct their own exams. One of them is that such a school must have a real, large safe. A kind of “secure entry room” known as the “strong room”.

During an exam period, the exams are transported from the Ministry’s Strong Room to the School’s Strong Room and stored there until use. The exams filled out by the children are then securely stored in the Strong Room until they are returned to the Ministry in a special box.

We took this into account during the construction of the primary school, of course. A very good strong room was built immediately. Secured with bars (burglar bars) for the windows of the office where the strong room is installed as a separate safe. But it appeared to be not enough. The bars had to be from a thicker size then the originals where. 

Everyone was of course very happy and proud when the school also received the title of “exam center”. This means that exam candidates can take their exams at their own school instead of having to walk to one of the other schools each time to take their exams. And that not only means taking your exam at a “strange” school among children not from your own class or school, but also often having to walk much farther (and in December it can be very hot) and thus getting up even earlier than very early already.

Unfortunately, it turned out that the bars needed to be thicker than they were. And an additional barred door for the steel door of the strong room needed to be installed. 

And the exams must be transported in sturdy transport thrunks from the Ministry to the school and back again. And of course, they must also be securely and cleanly stored. For this, we purchased one transport thrunk from a local store and had one iron thrunk made by a local welding company. There was a little mishap with the first thrunk as it was a bit too big, but that was quickly and efficiently resolved with the help of a cutting-machine :). 

 The Xavier Community School earned Examination Center Designation. The job has since been completed. They are ready to go for the Grade 7 exams in December 2024!
