Schoolvakantie! Closing day ceremony at the Linda Blind Farm School

Ook op de Linda Blind Farm School brak onlangs de voorjaarsvakantie aan. Twee weken. Van 23 april t/m 10 mei. Maar in Zambia gaat het nu richting winter (in plaats van zomer in Nederland). Dus het is een soort herfstvakantie.

 

Op de laatste dag voor de voorjaarvakantie geen Koningsspelen maar een sluitingsceremonie. Een ceremony waarbij er voor de elke klas drie kleine presentjes beschikbaar zijn. Voor de drie kinderen die de schooltesten het beste gemaakt hebben. Bedoeld om iedereen te motiveren om hun best te blijven doen op school. Ik hoop zelf dat er ook presentjes gaan komen voor kinderen die heel ijverig hun best doen maar misschien niet de hoogste cijfers halen. Ik heb een ballonnetje opgelaten.

Charles, in het schooluniform, is helemaal blij. Zijn vader, supertrots, begeleidde hem vervolgens vol trots op de catwalk. Ook het meisje, Loveness, in het prachtige gele jurkje is helemaal blij. Ze is net nieuw op school. Dit jaar gestart in grade 3. In een klas met 30 leerlingen kreeg zij het presentje voor degene die de beste cijfers gehaald heeft bij de laatste toetsen. Dat is ook een prachtige prestatie natuurlijk.

 

 

En voor de alerte kijker, werp ook even een blik op de catwalk zelf. Binnenkort meer over deze catwalk.

Recently there was this school break. Two weeks break. In Holland it is called “spring break” , but in Zambia we are not heading up to the summer but into the winter. It is the other way up. Although I have to confess, I like the winters in Zambia. Mostly between 20 and 25 degree. I looks odd, me in shorts and a t-shirt, children wearing knitted hats and coats.

But back to this school break. As in Holland we have our King’s Birthday before the spring break starts, at the Linda Blind Farm School they had there closing ceremony. For every grade there where 3 small presents available. Meant for the three children of every grade who had the best test results. They are given presents. According to the teachers a Zambian way, “to motivate children to work hard and put there efforts towards the lessons”.

We had this discussion on how children feel encouraged and motivated doing their best for the brain tests but for example excel in other ways like sports, craftsmanship, cooperating in groups with other children et cetera. Because they work hard in their own way.  Isn’t there this risk children who are highly motivated and join in, still feel not included for example? But as the teachers told me, they do different activities such as quiz games, dances, sports et cetera to accommodate all the children. A kind of a sports day where children compeet with other classes: pre school to each other, grade 1- grade 2, et cetera.
