July 2022 Martha

Voor een hele bijzondere ceremony nodig je een hele bijzonder gast uit. Dat is de eregast: the guest of honour. Over onze eregast op de Ceremony later zeker meer. Nu wil ik jullie graag (opnieuw) kennis laten maken met een voor mij zeer dierbare, bijzondere gast die we speciaal voor de opening genodigd hadden. Dit was een grote verrassing voor iedereen. Niemand wist het. Deze bijzondere gast wilde ook graag een korte speech geven. En dat was echt heel erg bijzonder.

Wie is het dan? Ja, U kent haar al. Zij is mijn inspiratiebron. De eerste leerling met wie het voor mij allemaal begon. Een van de allereerste leerlingen van de Linda Blind Farm School, nu dus de Xavier Community School. Zij maakte deel uit van het groepje van 5 kinderen waar de school ooit in 2012 mee van start is gegaan. Inderdaad, het groepje dat ooit begon in dat gat tussen twee huizen in, met een gordijntje ervoor.

2014 and 2016

Onze hele dierbare, bijzondere, speciale gast is… juist dat is Martha! Nu 15 jaar oud, en in haar eerste jaar van secundary (middelbare) school. Jullie kennen Martha vast al. Haar stem kreeg een geluid in mijn TEDx talk terug in 2013. Haar droom is onze drijvende kracht en is mijn drijfveer. Haar droom om later lerares te worden. En niet een lerares op zomaar een school, nee, op de Xavier Community School. Het is dan ook altijd een groot plezier om haar weer terug te zien als we in Zambia zijn, en om te zien hoe hard ze werkt om haar droom waar te maken! En Martha maakt werk van haar droom, dat is heel duidelijk! Niet alleen heeft ze het voor elkaar om nu op de secundary school te zitten, ze loopt zelfs al een informele stage op de Xavier Community School, bij Bridget.

Te midden van honderden mensen, en voor een tent vol met hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, stapte Martha zonder schroom en zelfverzekerd naar voren tijdens de openingsceremony.

En in het Engels, voor een groot publiek, voor een tent vol met belangrijke functionarissen, met microfoon in de hand, vertelde ze haar verhaal. Over hoe de school ooit gestart was. Hoe snel de school gegroeid was in de loop van de jaren. Hoeveel beter het onderwijs was geworden.

Maar bovenal vertelde ze over hoe deze school ervoor heeft gezorgd dat ook zij naar school kon. Dat zij haar diploma kan gaan halen, en later lerares kan worden.

Naar school gaan is belangrijk want het helpt je je dromen waar te maken. We hadden ons geen betere spreekster kunnen wensen om een speech te houden en haar verhaal, recht uit het hart, te delen met alle aanwezigen op de Ceremony en met u.

U begrijpt, in mijn speech erna, heb ik onze special guest of honour, Mr. Kambunga, DEBS at the Ministry of Educatie, uitgenodigd om Martha niet uit het oog te verliezen. Want goud is iets wat je vasthoudt.

Dank je, Martha! Complimenten! Veel complimenten. Dat je naar voren bent gestapt en je stem hebt laten horen. Prachtig gesproken. Iedereen werd er stil van. En kennende, je jezelf hebben zien ontwikkelen van dat kleine meisje dat ik voor het eerst ontmoette op de hoek van die kleine school tot deze jonge vrouw die haar stem laat horen voor dit grote publiek: je bent een fantastische, veelbelovende, jonge vrouw. Het zal je zeker lukken jouw dromen waar te maken. En om lerares te worden. Op de Xavier Community School natuurlijk! Je hebt een geweldige toekomst voor je! Je bent onze inspiratie omdat je jezelf inspireert. Keep on going. We will keep in touch and meet againg. And I hope, as a teacher at the Xavier Community School!

Please meet Martha! 

May I introduce: a very dear special guest at the opening ceremony. Please meet: a special guest at the opening, very dear to us all and to me for sure too.

For a very special ceremony, you invite a very special guest. That is the guest of honour. More about our guest of honour at the Ceremony later. Now I would like to introduce you (again) to a very dear, special guest that we had invited especially for the opening. This was a big surprise for everyone. Nobody knew.
This special guest also wanted to give a short speech. And that was really very special.

So who is it? Yes, you know her already. She’s my inspiration. The first pupil with whom it all started for me. One of the very first pupils of the Linda Blind Farm School, now the Xavier Community School, member of the group of five children with whom the school once started in 2012. Indeed, the group that once started in that hole between two houses, with a curtain in front of it.

2017 and 2018 Martha

Our very dear, special guest is… for sure.. is Martha! Now 15 years old and in her first year of secondary school. You probably already know Martha. Her voice got a sound in my TEDx talk back in 2013. Her dream is our driving force and is my driving force. Her dream to become a teacher. And not a teacher at just any school, no, at Xavier Community School. It is always a great pleasure to see her again when we are in Zambia, and to see how hard she is working to make her dream come true! And Martha is working on her dream, for sure. Not only has she managed to get into the secondary school now, she is even doing an informal internship at the Xavier Community School, with teacher Bridget.

In the midst of hundreds of people, and in front of a tent filled with dignitaries, Martha confidently stepped forward during the opening ceremony.
And in English, in front of a large audience, full of important officials, she shared her story about how the school had started. How quickly the school had grown over the years. How much better the education had become.
But most of all, she told about how this school had ensured that she too could go to school. That she can get her diploma and later become a teacher.

Going to school makes your dreams come true. We couldn’t have wished for a better speaker to give a speech and share her story, straight from the heart, with all the audience at the Ceremony and with you.

And of course, in my speech afterwards, I invited our special guest of honour, Mr. Kambunga, DEBS from the Ministry of Education, not to lose sight of Martha. Because gold is something you hold on to.

Thank you, Martha! Compliments! Many compliments. For stepping forward and sharing you voice! Beautifully spoken. It made everyone silent. And knowing you for all those years, watching you developing yourself from that small girl I first met on the corner of that small school into this young woman raising her voice to this big audience, you are a fantastic, promising, young woman. Definitely you will succeed in becoming a teacher! You have a great future ahead!
