En dan breekt de “zomervakantie” aan in Zambia. Nederland waagt zich met de schaats op het ijs. In Zambia is het nu hartje zomer (al wordt men nu wel verrast met hevige stortbuien). En wat hoort bij het aanbreken van de zomervakantie: de toetsen voor de overgang naar de volgende klas. Want in Zambia loopt het schooljaar van Januari t/m December.

And then the “summer vacation” starts in Zambia. The Netherlands ventures out onto the ice to skate. In Zambia it is now heart of summer (although one is now surprised with heavy downpours). And what goes with the onset of summer vacation: the tests for the transition to the next grade. Because in Zambia, the school year runs from January to December.

Zo ook voor de kinderen van de Xavier Community School. Wat een vooruitgang is er geboekt. Jaren geleden maakte ik nog zelf tests voor de school. Zelf opdrachten verzinnen, op papier schrijven en tekeningen maken, kopieen maken uit kleurboeken die ik meegebracht had en dan konden de kinderen aan de slag.

Nu is de Xavier Community School/de Linda Blind Farm School, een echte school. Met echte tests. En zelfs een echte store-room om tests in op te bergen. Echte tests, voor elke grade. Zelfs de kinderen in de baby-class oefenen al met opdrachtjes.

In 2014 waren er nog maar 60-80 kinderen. In dat huisje van 4×4. Nu, 8 jaar later, is er niet alleen een echte pre school (die we in 2014 al bouwden en openden) maar ook een echte primary school. Van 1 klein lokaaltje groeide de Xavier Community School/de Linda Blind Farm School, uit naar een heuse school met 6 echt prachtige klaslokalen, een echte bieb, een computerlab in opbouw, een lerarenkamer en een office voor de headteacher. En daar is het zelfs niet bij gebleven maar daarover volgende keer meer. Waar het echt om gaat is er nu al 270 kinderen elke dag, met veel plezier, naar school gaan. kinderen voor wie anders de schooldeuren hun leven lang gesloten waren gebleven. Op 1 januari 2023 komt Grade 6 er al bij. En zo groeit de school elk jaar met een nieuwe grade.

And the Grade 1 kids can even read and understand a textbook already. Each child has their own set of books. Check!

At Grade 4, it gets even more real. Almost like in a final exam setup. Neatly back to back in the benches.

Heel veel dank aan iedereen die de school, het team, mij en de Stichting Bouwstenen voor Zambia het vertrouwen gegeven hebben en nog steeds doen. Heel veel dank aan iedereen die dit mee mogelijk gemaakt heeft en op welke manier dan ook een steentje bij gedragen heeft. In Zambia, hier in Nederland of waar ook ter wereld. Jong en ouder. Klein en groter. Ik zal vast en zeker iemand te kort doen als ik namen ga noemen. Daarom hou ik het bij mijn partners in Zambia: de teachers en het oudercomittee, Mr Thomas, Kennedy en Rabeccah Mukumbo van Dream Livingstone Zambia, het Ministerie van Educatie in Zambia met destijds mr Billy Milimo en mr Kambunga, met het bouwdepartement ook en de Council van Livingstone, de Petrus Banden School in Venray, het Stedelijk Gymnasium in Nijmegen, Bouwgroep Koopmans, de Lions Club International en natuurlijk de Stichting Wilde Ganzen.

En we zijn er nog niet. Want de kinderen, ouders en teachers hebben de smaak te pakken. Ze willen graag door naar een middelbare school. Over 2 jaar komen de eerste kinderen van Grade 7 en dan… ja wat dan? Dan willen ze heel graag door naar de secundary school. De vraag ligt voor of ik hier met mijn stichting Bouwstenen voor Zambia ook wat in kan betekenen. U kent het Afrikaanse gezegde al: “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together”. And together we got this far. Together we want to go further. Voor kinderen voor wie bouwen aan een betere toekomst via goed onderwijs, met vereende krachten en met uw hulp, werkelijkheid is geworden. Some dreams can’t wait. Als u mee wilt helpen aan de volgende stap en u wilt hier meer over weten, voel u vrij om contact op te nemen.

En dan toch alvast even een korte terugblik naar 2014… U hoeft niet hard te zoeken naar de verschillen.. Scrollt u nog even mee?

So it there was this testperiode for the children of Xavier Community School too. What progress has been made. Years ago teachers and I were making the tests for the school by our selves. Completely hand-made. Making up assignments ourselves, writing on paper and making drawings, making copies from coloring books I had brought and then the children could get to work.

Now the Xavier Community School/Linda Blind Farm School, is a real school. With real tests. And even a real store-room to store tests in. Real tests, for every grade. Even the children in baby class are already practicing with assignments.

In 2014, there were only 60-80 kids. In that little 4×4 house. Now, 8 years later, there is not only a real pre school (which we already built and opened in 2014) but also a real primary school. From 1 small classroom, the Linda Blind Farm School, grew into a real school with 6 really beautiful classrooms, a real library, a computer lab under construction, a teachers’ room and an office for the headteacher. And it didn’t even stop there but more on that next time.
What really matters is that 270 children are already going to school every day, with great pleasure. 270 Children for whom otherwise the school doors would have remained closed for life. On January 1, 2023, Grade 6 will already be added. And so every year the school grows with a new grade.

And we are not there yet. Because the children, parents and teachers have a taste for it. They want to go on to secondary school. In 2 years the first children of Grade 7 will arrive and then …. then what? Then they really want to go on to secundary school. The question is whether I can do something about this with my foundation Building Blocks for Zambia. You know the African saying: “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together”. And together we got this far. Together we want to go further. For children for whom building a better future through good education has, with combined efforts and your help, become a reality. Some dreams can’t wait.
