Werkbezoeken in Livingstone is altijd hard werken en veel vergaderingen. Hard work and lots of meetings.

Stap voor stap gaan we vooruit. Hier samen met de DEBS van het Ministry of Education- Zambia, Mr B. Milimo. We kennen elkaar vanaf het prille begin, bijna 12,5 jaar geleden al weer, in februari 2014. Met veel wederzijds respect en achting bespreken we de ontwikkelingen, plannen, strategieën en samenwerkingspunten. Wat een inspirerende, energieke en ook altijd bezige man. Achterin op de kast ligt een voetbal. Enkele jaren geleden gaf ik die voetbal aan de voorganger van Mr Milimo. Bedoeld als openingsbal voor een sporttoernooi bij de opening van de uitbreidingsplannen voor de Xavier Community School. De bal wacht geduldig en volhardend

En eronder foto’s van vergaderingen met het project team en met de architect van het tweede project waarvoor ik hier nu ben: de voorbereidingen voor de bouw van de Highlands Tijhaar Vocational School. Een echte vakschool/beroepsonderwijs. Dat doe ik voor de stichting WTEF (Wim Tijhaar Educatiefonds voor Hoop en Toekomstkansen).

De voorzitter van het WTEF fonds las een paar jaar geleden een artikel in het Bridge Magazine over het werk wat we met Bouwstenen voor Zambia doen in Zambia. Het WTEF fonds benaderde mij daarop in 2024 met de vraag of ik mij in wilde zetten voor nog een onderwijsvoorziening voor de meest kwetsbare kinderen of jongeren in Zambia. Als ik dat zou willen, dan wilde het WTEF fonds zich daar ook voor inzetten.

Tijdens het werkbezoek in december 2024/januari 2025 heb ik een onderzoek gedaan naar de behoefte aan het type onderwijs in Livingstone. Samen met het Ministry of Education. Van lang naar kort is m.b.v. dat verkenningsonderzoek en het advies van het Ministry of Education gekozen voor de oprichting van een vakschool op de Highlands Open Learning School.

Namens het WTEF fonds help ik nu mee om dat project te realiseren. Tijdens dit werkbezoek heb ik met het project team en het Ministry of Education het projectplan verder uitgewerkt. Een kans uit duizenden voor de jongens en meiden, vrouwen en mannen ook die een beroepsopleiding willen volgen om een mooie plek op die arbeidsmarkt te verkrijgen. Working visits in Livingstone always mean hard work and lots of meetings. Hard work and lots of meetings — but also step by step, moving forward.

Here I am together with the DEBS of the Ministry of Education in Zambia, Mr B. Milimo. We have known each other from the very beginning — almost 12.5 years ago now, since February 2014. With great mutual respect and appreciation, we discuss developments, plans, strategies and points of cooperation.

What an inspiring, energetic and always very busy man he is. At the back, on top of the cupboard, there is a football. A few years ago, I gave that football to Mr Milimo’s predecessor. It was meant to be the opening ball for a sports tournament during the opening of the expansion plans for Xavier Community School. The ball is still waiting there — patiently and persistently.

Below are photos of meetings with the project team and with the architect of the second project for which I am currently here: the preparations for the construction of the Highlands Tijhaar Vocational School. A real vocational school, offering practical, skills-based education.

I am doing this on behalf of the WTEF Foundation: the Wim Tijhaar Education Foundation for Hope and Future Opportunities. The chair of the WTEF Foundation had read an article in Bridge Magazine about the work we are doing in Zambia through Bouwstenen voor Zambia. Because of that, the WTEF Foundation approached me in 2024 and asked whether I would be willing to commit myself to another educational facility for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in Zambia. If I was willing to do so, the WTEF Foundation was ready to support it as well.

During my working visit in December 2024 and January 2025, I carried out an exploratory study into the need for this type of education in Livingstone, together with the Ministry of Education. The outcome was clear: a vocational school was needed.

Based on this exploratory study and the advice of the Ministry of Education, the idea was narrowed down step by step. The decision was made to establish a vocational school at Highlands Open Learning School. On behalf of the WTEF Foundation, I am now helping to turn this project into reality.

During this working visit, I further developed the project plan together with the project team and the Ministry of Education. This is a truly exceptional opportunity for boys and girls, women and men who want to follow vocational training and gain a meaningful place in the labour market.
