Nog voor de officiële openingsceremonie van de Olympische Spelen ontmoeten Zambia en Nederland elkaar in het Miyachi Stadion in Rifu. In Tokio, Japan. Vandaag of morgen afhankelijk van het moment waarop u dit leest. Woensdag 21 juli, 13.00 u. Op de grasmat. Op de voetbalgrasmat.

Even before the official opening ceremony of the Olympic Games 2021, Zambia and The Netherlands will meet up in the Miyache Stadium in Rifu, Tokyo, Japan. Today or tomorrow depending on the time you read this blog. Wednesday 21st at 1PM. On the green pitches, On the football pitch to be more specific.

Het vrouwenteam van Zambia, onder leiding van bondscoach Bruce Mwape, komt in Tokio voor het eerst uit in een eindtoernooi van een grote titelstrijd. Maar ook voor het Nederlandse vrouwenvoetbal is het de eerste keer dat een Nederlands vrouwenteam mee doet aan het Olympisch voetbaltoernooi. 1-1 al bij de start dus. Twaalf landen doen mee in Tokio.

The Zambian women’s team of Zambian Senior Women Coach Bruce Mwape, will be playing for the first time in a final tournament: at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. For the Dutch women’s soccerteam of the Dutch Senior Coach Sarina Wiegman, it will be the first time participating in the Olympic Games as well. A one-to-one draw, for a start. Twelve football nations compete in Tokyo.

Leuk detail: de Nederlandse en Zambiaanse vrouwenvoetbalteams delen al een aantal dagen het hotel in Sendai waar ze zich allebei voorbereiden op de start van het olympisch voetbaltoernooi. Maar contact onderling kan niet. De lift mag niet gezamenlijk gebruikt worden, de tijden van eten zijn anders en de looplijnen van het hotel zijn zo uitgestippeld dat de speelsters van beide landen elkaar niet tegen het lijf kunnen lopen. Aldus  dagblad Trouw onlangs.

Nice detail: the Dutch and Zambian teams have been sharing a hotel for a few days in Sendai where they are both preparing for the start of the Olympics. But mutual contact can not be. For instance: they can’t use the elevators at the same time. Breakfast, lunchtime, dinnertime all on different times too. And of course the walkinglines in the hotel are mapped out so members of both teams can’t bump into each other. According to the Dutch newspaper “Trouw”.

   

Barbra Banda is de aanvoerster, spits en misschien wel de sterspeelster van het Zambiaanse team. Was zij in 2018 de eerste Zambiaanse speelster die een contract tekende bij een Spaanse club, het afgelopen seizoen verhuisde ze naar de Chinese competitie. Met 18 doelpunten was ze meteen de topscoorder in deze competitie.

Barbra Banda is the captain and star striker of the Zambian team. In 2018 she was the first Zambian player to sign a contract with a Spanish club and last season she moved to the Chinese competition. With 18 goals she immediately was the top scoring player.

Nederland en Zambia spelen in groep F. Met China en Brazilië. En een primeur voor Zambia woensdag want het Zambiaanse vrouwenelftal speelde nog nooit tegen een Europese tegenstander. En dat dat nu net Nederland mag worden, is toch wel echt leuk. Ik vertrouw op verrassend voetbal woensdag. En tja.. mijn support gaat ook deze keer naar Zambia en naar het Zambiaanse vrouwenelftal.

The Netherlands and Zambia play in group F. Together with China and Brazil. And a first for the Zambian team because their women’s team has never even played a European opponent. And the fact that their first just happens to be against The Netherlands really is sort of cool. I rely on a surprising and entertaining soccer afternoon this Wednesday. And well… my support on Wednesday goes to Zambia and the Zambian team, as you will understand.
