In Zambia, that can be a reality! Join Jasper Doest, a Dutch photographer, for his documentary airing on December 26 at 8:20 PM on NPO 2.
What would you do if a herd of elephants walked through your garden every evening, crossed the main road, or foraged for mangoes just meters from your children’s school? While it may sound exotic, for many in Zambia, this is a daily occurrence.

Above: A resident in front of her house in Dambwa South (Livingstone) anxiously waits outside her house each night for elephants that visit her garden. Their presence causes sleepless nights and threatens her last mango tree.
As human development encroaches on wildlife habitats, climate change increasingly causes elephants to stray from their traditional routes, bringing them closer to human communities.
In Livingstone, we witnessed this firsthand: a whole herd crossing the street right in front of our car. Day after day. Meanwhile, a goods cyclist making daily trips from the Zimbabwean border had to flee for his life as elephants blocked his path.
The Xavier Community School, located near several mango trees, used to provide daily fruit for local residents. Sadly, the elephants have discovered these trees, and once they know where to find food, they are sure to return.
Jasper Doest reflects, “During my travels in Zambia, I saw how humans and animals struggle to survive together. It’s not a battle between ‘good’ and ‘evil,’ but a shared quest for balance in a changing world, demanding nuance, understanding, and cooperation.”
In “In the Path of the Elephant,” daily challenges faced by residents, elephants, and conservationists are highlighted through stunning footage by @friedjan_ and @klomp.thomas, along with photography from Jan Doest. The film showcases how people strive to coexist with a growing elephant population, while conservationists seek solutions like creating wildlife corridors in landscapes dominated by agriculture and infrastructure.
