Highest point into view! Hoogste punt in zicht!

We hebben weer nieuwe foto’s gekregen vanuit Zambia. De Linda Blind Farm School bereikt het hoogste punt. New pictures from the construction process of the Linda Blind Farm School/ Xavier Community School. The highest point in view!

Het hoogste punt is een echte mijlpaal. In Nederland wordt dat traditiegetrouw gevierd met “pannenbier”. Dan wordt de vlag uitgestoken, op het hoogste punt. En weer gestreken als het pannenbier gezamenlijk opgedronken is. Een alternatief in Nederland schijnt te zijn om een meiboom op de nok te plaatsen. We zijn nog bijna zover.

Helaas geen uitgebreide ceremony op school nu dankzij het Corona virus. Nog niet echt toegeslagen in Livingstone, gelukkig. Maar natuurlijk heeft het wel heel erg sterk het dagelijks leven, zeker van de mensen waar wij en voor mee werken, geraakt.

Reaching the highest point is a real milstone. In The Netherlands it is traditionally celebrated with, what the Dutch call “roof tile beer”. The flag will be raised till the highest point. And brought down after the “roof tile beer” had been drunk together by the client and the constructor and his his staff. And in this case also the staff of the school. And.. it could be a big party again. And as an alternative here we apparently use a so called “May-pole” (a long pole having a triangle and two circles on top) and put this one on the roof. The origins of which date back to the 14th century.

Unfortunately we can’t celebrate extensively because of the Corona virus now. It did not reach Livingstone yet but it is affecting the economy and society, very very much. See for this my former blog about the lock down on the homepage of this website.

Weet u waarom het pannenbier genoemd wordt? Omdat na het bereiken van het hoogste punt, de volgende stap is dat de dakpannen op het dak gelegd kunnen worden. Nu worden het op de Linda Blind Farm School geen pannen maar dakplaten.

Why is it called “roof tile beer”? Because after reaching the highest point, the next step is laying the roof tiles. At Xavier Community School no roof tiles but steady roofing sheets.
