Een echte lockdown als je van dag tot dag moet leven?

Ook in Zambia beheerst Corona het dagelijks leven. Langzaam maar helaas ook zeker grijpt ook hier het virus steeds meer om zich heen. Tot op dit moment heeft het virus zich nog niet in Livingstone en op de Linda Blind Farm laten zien. Althans niet wat betreft ziekte. Zeker wel in economische zin. En wat geld voor je dagelijks eten en gezond blijven liggen voor de meest kwetsbare mensen en kinderen erg, erg dicht bij elkaar.

In Zambia, the daily life is dominated by the Coronavirus too. Slowly but unfortunately steadily the virus is spreading in Zambia. Up till now the virus has not arrived in Livingstone or the Linda Farm. While fortunately no one has been infected, the virus however has a big economic impact. Many were already struggling to provide food to their children every day, and the virus has made matters much worse.

Zambia kent een oppervlakte van ruim 752.614 km2. Twintig keer zo groot als Nederland. Met ruim 18 miljoen mensen. Dat zijn er dan nog maar iets meer dan de 17 miljoen mensen in Nederland. Het zuidelijke deel, waar de Linda Blind Farm School staat, is het “echte” toeristische centrum. Dat komt natuurlijk door de Victoria Falls. Bijna letterlijk op maar een steenworp afstand van de Linda Blind Farm School. Je kunt het lopen als je de hitte kunt weerstaan.

The Zambian territory has a total are of 752614 km2. Over 20 times the size of the Netherlands. With just about the same number of civilians, around 18 million. The Southern part of Zambia, where the school is located, is the touristic hotspot. Of course, because of the Victoria Falls. When teaching at school, you can watch the smoke coming off the falls.

Het openbare leven ligt ook in Zambia grotendeels plat. Scholen zijn gesloten. En dus ook de Linda Blind Farm School. Online onderwijs is voor de meeste scholen geen optie. Kinderen van de Linda Blind Farm School hebben geen Ipads, laptops of computers thuis. Laat staan internet. Eén lampje om huiswerk bij te maken als de scholen open zijn, is al een luxe. In 2017 mocht ik de kinderen daarbij nog helpen door elk huis op de Linda Blind Farm zelf een waka waka te overhandigen. Misschien weet u dat nog wel (een -zak-lamp op zonne energie).

Public life is down in Zambia. Schools are closed and so is of course the Linda Blind Farm School. Unfortunately, online classes are impossible. The children do not have access to laptops, iPads or computers. Not to mention accessibility to Wi-Fi.

Corona als gezondheidscrisis grijpt steeds sneller om zich heen. Het startte in de hoofdstad Lusaka en trok naar de Copperbelt in het noorden. Ooit een bloeiend gebied vanwege de kopermijnen. Sinds de crash van de koperprijs in de jaren 70 en misschien ook wel versterkt door de verkoop van de mijnen aan buitenlandse investeerders, is de Copperbelt nu ook een van de armste gebieden. Veel families van de Linda Blind Farm school hebben hun oorsprong in de Copperbelt. Nee, niet als aandeelhouders. Integendeel.

This health crisis is spreading in Zambia. The first cases were tested positive in Lusaka, the capital. Last week many cases were found near the Tanzanian border and the Copperbelt. Some of the poorest villages in Zambia. Especially in the Copperbelt, where people depending on the copper price and many of the natural recourses are owned by foreign investors. Many families at the farm original come from the Copperbelt. And no, not as shareholders.

Wel of geen mondkapje? Mondkapjes zijn inmiddels verplicht bijvoorbeeld in de minibus en in de winkels. Maar een mondkapje kost al snel 30- 50 kwatcha. En dat is, voor de meest kwetsbare mensen een heel weekloon voor één mondkapje. Tja, een keurmerk zit er dan zeker niet op. En mocht je er al een bemachtigd hebben, dan wordt die bijna van je neus weer weggekaapt want wat doe je als je er 60 kwatcha voor geboden krijgt?

To wear a mask or not? Masks are obligated in Zambia when visiting shops, markets and using public transport. Unfortunately, the cost of the masks is high, 30-50 kwacha. For the most vulnerable people this is the same as multiple days of salary. And we are not talking about face masks with international acknowledged quality marks.

Geld om mondkapjes of zeep te betalen dan wel je kleren extra te wassen met wasmiddel? Verkoop van groenten op de markt is verboden. Je begrijpt waar de ouders van onze kinderen hun beetje geld mee binnen halen als ze al wat hebben. En dat is nu dus ook niet mogelijk.

Wel of niet naar het ziekenhuis als het Coronavirus je te pakken heeft gekregen? IC bedden zijn er nauwelijks. En dat is al helemaal zeker een ver van mijn bed show voor de gezinnen die Bouwstenen voor Zambia ondersteunt.

But how to earn money to pay for the face masks or hand sanitizer? Selling vegetables at the market, the main source of income for many families, is not allowed. And the tourism industry is down, completely. Earning money for a daily income is not possible for many of the parents of children at the Linda Farm.  And what if the coronavirus got to you in Zambia? Hospitals are expensive and there are only a very very few intensive care beds in Zambia.

Elke keer je handen goed wassen met desinfecterende gel? Toegang tot water is een groot probleem. Om het over desinfecterende gel nog niet eens te hebben. De Linda Blind Farm beschikt over een waterkraan in het midden van het dorp. Ook de kinderen van de school maken hier gebruik van. De rivier achter het dorp, is geen alternatief. Zelfs niet voor de krokodillen die zich daar, door de droogte, uit de voeten gemaakt hebben.

Washing your hands with hand sanitizer is also very difficult. Access to water is scarce. Not even to mention the access to hand sanitizers. The Linda Farm only has one water tap in the middle of the village, which is also used by the children of the school. Using the river behind the school? That certainly is not an alternative, the risks are immense with all the crocodiles swimming there.

Anderhalve meter afstand en social distancing… mensen leven met 8 tot 10 mensen in een huisje of hutje van 4×4. Vaak met meerdere generaties want opa of oma woont er ook bij. Het huisje van de buren, 2 meter next door of nog dichter bij? 35- 40 graden buiten. Mensen slapen in hun huis maar het leven speelt zich niet af binnen deze 4 muurtjes.

Social distancing, keeping one and a half meters distance… People live with 8 to 10 people in their house of 4×4 meters. Mostly with the extended family in one house. Aunts, uncles, grandparents. With 35 degrees outside it is impossible to live inside. Keeping distance, to say the least, is very difficult without a house big enough to live in.

En na een paar weken lock down zijn de economische gevolgen voor de regering ook aanleiding om tot versoepeling van de maatregelen over te gaan. De Victoria Falls zijn heropent door de president. Daarvoor reisde hij speciaal af naar Livingstone, bezocht een aantal hotels en gebruikte er zijn lunch. Voor een aantal mensen werkzaam in de toeristenindustrie weer een lichtpuntje. De effecten voor het gezondheidsrisico moeten afgewacht worden.

After the first months of lockdown the negative impact on the economy was the primary reason for the government to ease the measures. The president flew to Livingstone to officially open the Victoria Falls. A bright spot on the horizon for the tourism industry. Unfortunately, the number of new cases has increased exponentially the last week.

De focus op the future. Op dit moment werken we met onze partners in Zambia aan oplossingen. We kijken naar het nu en houden we onze blik op de toekomst. Dat is waar wij als Bouwstenen voor Zambia met onze lokale partners ook voor gaan. Wat zijn de behoeften? Op de hele korte termijn en op de langere termijn. Er wordt gewerkt aan plannen voor een echte waterput met waterpomp. Om de groententuin te besproeien. De groententuin van de Linda Blind Farm en dan ook een stuk tuin voor de school. Is dit het moment om ook die schoolkeuken proberen te realiseren? Tenminste 1 voedzame maaltijd per dag en tegelijk een veilige kookgelegenheid voor de gezinnen op de Farm. De apps en mails gaan over en weer op de telefoon en laptop.

Focussing on the future. Now we work together with our partners in Zambia to investigate solutions. What are the needs? Short term and long term. We are working on a plan to provide the farm with a real water hole, with more water taps. So, the Farm can also farm in the dry period. We also thinking about building a school kitchen, to provide all the students with at least one healthy meal a day. Communicating is hard, as internet cafés have been closed. However, WhatsApp saves us, and we use it intensively every day.

En bovenal is er natuurlijk de Linda Blind Farm Primary School. Die dankzij de steun van u allen er zelfs al bijna staat. Phase 3 Roof Level gaat starten. Het bedrag voor deze derde fase is net overgemaakt naar Zambia.

To conclude with a positive note, above the new school building coming up. Thanks to the help of all donors, sponsors and ambassadors and a lot, a lot of people and organizations like Bouwgroep Koopmans BV, the Winkel van Sinkel in Grubbenvorst and Wild Geese Foundation and many many people who have a warm hart for the Xavier Community School and its mission,  the building is soon to be completed. Phase 3, the roof is starting now. We have transferred all the funds last week. We will update you soon in a new blog. And Martha: Martha wants to become a teacher. Yes, at Xavier Community School!
