De vlag gaat uit! Hoisting the flag! But, unfortunately there is a but too.

De Zambiaanse vlag wappert op de Linda Blind Farm Community School. The Zambian flag now flaps at the Xavier Community School.

Een Zambiaanse school kan eigenlijk niet zonder. Een vlaggenmast met vlag. Een soort middelpunt van de school. Het centrum van het schoolplein. Alle officiële ceremonies worden hier gehouden. Rapportuitreikingen bijvoorbeeld, of het vieren van het einde van het semester.

Maar bovenal beginnen alle kinderen hier samen de dag en eindigen ze hier samen de dag voordat we huiswaarts keren: met de vlagceremonie. De vlag wordt gehesen en het nationale volkslied gezongen.

Ik herinner me het nog goed, een paar jaar geleden kwam een hoogwaardigheidsbekleder op bezoek op school. Iedereen druk, druk want het volkslied zingen, dat moest natuurlijk mooi klinken. Er werd snel een extra zangles ingepland. Gelukkig zijn de kinderen zogenoemde “quick learners” en met de ceremonie is het helemaal goed gekomen.

De vlag hebben we al in februari 2017 in Livingstone gekocht. Want behalve veel inhoudelijke criteria om het bouwproces voor de primary school in een versnelde procedure te kunnen brengen, waren er ook andere criteria zoals de aanwezigheid van een portret van de president in school (zoals je bij ons in gebouwen vaak een statieportret van de Koning aantreft) maar ook de beschikking hebben over de Zambiaanse vlag.

Maar wat is een vlag zonder vlaggenmast? De Linda Blind Farm School had nog geen vlaggenmast om de vlag te hijsen. En dan brengt de container uitkomst. Want inderdaad: daarin  lag ook een hele mooie, aluminium, vlaggenmast in. En niet 1. Maar zelfs 2 vlaggenmasten.

John Muleya, de aannemer,  haalt de vlaggenmasten uit de container (die nu overigens helemaal leeggemaakt is). John Muleya, owner of Gig Nidole, constructor of the Linda Blind Farm School/Xavier Community School,  picks the flagpoles out of the container to install them at both schools (the container, by the way, at the time has been completely emptied). 

En nu heeft de Linda Blind Farm School haar eigen vlaggenmast en dagelijkse vlaggenceremonies.

En we hebben zelfs een tweede school, the Dream Elementary School, gebouwd en gesteund door onze lokale partner Dream Livingstone Zambia, met een vlaggenmast kunnen verblijden.

Elke ochtend klinkt nu het nationale volkslied vanaf het schoolplein van twee nieuwe scholen: de Linda Blind Farm School en Dream Elementary School. En zingen de kinderen uit volle borst mee. De Zambiaanse vlaggen wapperen mee in de wind.

Maar terwijl ik deze blog voorbereidde, ontving ik een zorgwekkend en verontrustend bericht van de teachers: de vlaggen op beide scholen zijn sinds afgelopen donderdag met onmiddellijke ingang, gestreken. Voor in ieder geval 3 weken. In de volgende blog meer.

A Zambian school can not do without it. The national flag and a flag pole. The flags place is like the centre place of a school.  The place where official ceremonies are held. Like giving out the transcripts, or celebrating the start and the end of the term.

Above all, the flag and flag-pole are necessary for the daily opening and closing ceremony. It’s the traditional way to start (and end) the school day: raising and, at the end of the school day striking,  the national Zambian flag and singing the National Anthem.

I remember very well the day before a high official would visit the school in 2017. Everyone in a hurry and busy, busy.  With an official visiting the singing of the anthem had to be spot-on. They immediately changed the class’s schedule, to have some extra time to practice the National Anthem with the kids as a group. And the children again turned out to be so called “quick learners”: the performance the next day was indeed spot-on.

 

The flag-ceremony is a tradition in Zambia to start the day, but for a long time, the Linda Blind Farm school did not have a flagpole to raise the flag. But there was the container of course. Because it had shipped also two wonderful flagpoles from The Netherlands to Livingstone. One meant for the Linda Blind Farm School. The second one went to Dream Elementary School. A school in the Highlands, very much supported by our local partner Dream Livingstone Zambia. With this pole, both schools, the Linda Blind Farm School as Dream Elementary School, can finally fully-fledged celebrate the daily tradition of the flag ceremony. Now the children of both schools sing the National Anthem at the top of their lungs, every day, proudly, while the flags flapping.

But there is a but. While preparing this blog I received a worrying message from the teachers of the school. Both flags won’t flap at least in the three weeks coming ahead.
