De delta-variant van het corona-virus houdt momenteel zuidelijk Afrika in zijn greep. Zambia rapporteerde de afgelopen weken overvolle ziekenhuizen, en hogere besmettingscijfers als ooit tevoren. De groei van het aantal besmettingen lijkt de afgelopen week te nu af te nemen.

Om de trend te keren heeft de Zambiaanse overheid vorige week een soort totale lockdown afgekondigd. Ook de scholen hebben ze weer moeten sluiten. Vooralsnog voor 3 weken.

Dat zou betekenen dat ze volgende week weer open kunnen, maar de vraag is of de lockdown toch verlengd moet worden.

Geen school betekent in Zambia ook écht géén school. Er zijn geen faciliteiten voor online onderwijs. Families van de kinderen op de Linda Blind Farm School hebben geen laptops, Ipads en wifi thuis.  Alleen de enkele gelukkigen die een radio hebben, kunnen afstemmen op een overheids-radio-kanaal waar les via radio gevolgd kan worden.

De lockdown is nodig. De stijging van de besmettingen wijzen dat uit. Stijgingen in IC-cijfers zijn geen indicator want praten over 2000 IC-bedden is natuurlijk utopie in Zambia.  En over vaccinaties hoeven we het ook niet te hebben. Of juist wel! Want wij kopen vaccinaties in grote getalen in en vaccineren en vaccineren in Europa en de VS maar voor de mensen in Zambia is dat nog steeds toekomstmuziek. En die muziek klinkt nog steeds van heel ver weg.

Gezondheid gaat boven alles en daarmee veiligheid ook. Tegelijkertijd worden kinderen in kwetsbare situaties door corona het hardst geraakt. Dat is in Nederland en dat is zeker ook in Zambia. Vaccineren is ook hier het sleutelwoord. Ik hoop dat organisaties als COVAX en ook ontwikkelingshulp in Europa en VS ook Zambia op hun netvlies krijgen. En dat we kunnen verdelen. Want zonder solidariteit krijgen we corona echt niet de wereld uit. In tijden van nu is het juist nog belangrijker om over “eigen grenzen” heen te kijken.

Zodat kinderen en leraren juist ook op scholen als de Linda Blind Farm School, weer naar school kunnen. Want “education is the most powerful weapon to change the world” om met de woorden van Nelson Mandela te spreken. De kinderen, ouders en leraren van de Linda Blind Farm School zijn erg gemotiveerd om te bouwen aan een betere toekomst.

En ondertussen hebben we de ogen gericht op het voor elkaar krijgen van het handwash bassin. Omdat hygiëne en toegang tot schoon (drink) water een van de manieren is om covid op de Linda Blind Farm en de Linda Blind Farm School te lijf te gaan. Zodat men ook in Zambia “de handen stuk kan wassen”.

The delta-variant of COVID causes a lot of troubles in Sub-Saharan Africa. Zambia especially reported overflooded hospitals and the highest infection rates ever since Covid came up. The number of cases reported in Zambia, seems to have stabilized in the past week and hopefully will soon decrease. In order to stop the increase, the Zambian government had to order a full lockdown.  Including closing all schools for 3 full weeks. This would mean schools could open next week, but the question remains whether the lockdown will be prolonged.

Closing the schools is necessary as infection rates show. And the lack of vaccinations urge strict measures from the government because of health and safety reasons. But in Zambia at the same time closing schools means no access to school education. Zambia has few facilities for online education. Most families don’t have laptops or Ipads at home. Nor wifi. Only those lucky enough to possess a radio, can enjoy the government radio broadcast where they broadcast a digital class.

I sincerely hope this lockdown don’t has to last for a long time. Although of course health and safety always have to go first. The best answer to tackle covid is to vaccinate and to vaccinate. Unfortunately the vaccinations are not equally accessible in all parts of the world. COVAX as Europe and the United States for example have to broaden borders so we can tackle this covid together and therefore all over the world. So children like the children of the Linda Blind Farm School won’t be thrown back more as they have been. As (very) young as they are, they are very motivated to change there future by good education. As their parents, teachers, school committee and communities are. Because they know “education is the most powerful weapon the change the world”. And because health and safety is first, please let us go together in this too and join forces into getting vaccinations available for people all over the world. Including people who don’t have that easy access to health care. Including families and teachers like the families and teachers of the Linda Blind Farm School in Zambia.

And in the meanwhile we are focussing to get the hand wash bassin done. Because it is also a really important weapon to beat covid at the Linda Blind Farm and the Linda Blind Farm School. At the moment we all working together for this necessary special letter of agreement before starting the construction. So the people of the Linda Blind Farm, there visitors, the children and teachers of the Linda Blind Farm School, they all can wash there hands very thoroughly with clean, pure water many, many times a day. Because there is no lack of, clean, water any more and accessible for everyone including people with a disability, rain or shine.
