Christmas and New Year in Livingstone!

Kerstnacht voor ons 11 km in de lucht. Op weg naar Zambia. Christmas Eve at the hight of about 7 miles up in the sky. On my way to Zambia. Nu het contract met de aannemer getekend is, moeten we nog een paar puntjes op de i zetten. Er is de laatste maanden heel wat aan de hand in Zambia. De nationale munteenheid, de Kwatcha, is aan grote inflatie onderhevig. De koers wisselt met de dag. De kosten voor het levensonderhoud worden onbetaalbaar (electriciteit is met 300% verhoogd en een zak millimeal om nsjima, het nationale eten, te bereiden – zeg maar onze aardappelen of rijst in Azië is 2x over de kop gegaan). De materiaalkosten in de bouw stijgen ook flink. We moeten naar Zambia om hierover met onze partner Dream Livingstone en de aannemer afspraken te maken. En we willen zelf ook zien hoe het ervoor staat met bijvoorbeeld de prijzen en kosten.

Maar dat is het niet alleen. De agenda voor ons werkbezoek puilt uit. Er zijn meer doelen waar we mee aan de slag gaan. Onderzoek naar de noodzaak en haalbaarheid van zonnepanelen voor de school. En kunnen de mensen van de Linda Blind Farm daar dan ook op meeliften? Onderzoek naar de noodzaak en haalbaarheid om een ander belangrijk doel namelijk elk kind tenminste een voedzame maaltijd per dag, naar voren te halen. Heel belangrijk is daarbij dat er een goed exploitatieplan is van de farm, de ouders en de school. Dat klinkt wel wat bureaucratisch en raar zp omdat er honger en ondervoeding is en dan beginnen over een exploitatieplan. Maar met alles willen we werken aan duurzame oplossingen waar mensen zelf mee uit de voeten kunnen. Want alleen dan helpt het echt.

Now the construction of the primary school finally starts, we have to dot the I’s together with my local partners and the constructor. A lot is going on in Zambia the last few months. The national currency, the Kwatcha, is subject to inflation. The exchange rate is changing almost every day. The costs of day-to-day life increases every day. For example the costs of electricity has raised by 300% and the costs of a bag of millimeal (to prepare the national daily diner like potatoes or rice at your place) has increased doubled or more. Daily life for the most vulnerable people like the families of the children of the Linda Blind Farm School has become even more difficult.

And to look into the construction process of the primary school (an long time investment to help vulnerable children to kick the poverty out of their lives by accessible and good education), the costs of material has been increased too. So there is a lot to talk about and a lot to do the next 2 1/2 week. For example we will talk also about the urgency and practicability of solar panels for the school and if possible for the use of the people of the Linda Blind Farm as about the urgency to prior the goal for a kitchen and vegetable garden for the school so every child at least has one nutricious meal a day.
