Een kijkje achter de schermen: samen bouwen aan duurzame samenwerkingen. Voor een duurzame toekomst.

Samen bouwen aan de toekomst is letterlijk samen werken en samenwerken. Samen bouwen aan vertrouwen, aan relaties en samen bouwen aan resultaten. Letterlijk en figuurlijk slaan we als partners allemaal onze handen ineen en bouwen we aan toegankelijk, kwalitatief heel goed onderwijs voor kinderen en jongeren voor wie dat niet vanzelfsprekend is. En de kinderen en jongeren bouwen mee, aan een betere toekomst door met plezier naar school te gaan en hun stinkende best te doen.

Na afloop van een overleg is het traditie om te eindigen met een groepsfoto. Het leek me leuk om een verzameling daarvan met jullie te delen! Iedereen op deze foto’s speelt een belangrijke rol bij de Xavier Community School en onze toekomstplannen. Zo zien we bijvoorbeeld lokale partners die helpen bij de dagelijkse organisatie, maar ook een werkbezoek aan een school met veel ervaring in vakonderwijs. In de laatste week ontvingen we zelfs een delegatie van de directeur-generaal van een overheidsorganisatie uit de hoofdstad.

Het begon allemaal met mr Thomas (ik kom er nog even op terug), teacher Bridget en assistant to the teacher Elidah. Zij stonden aan de wieg van de school. Zij hingen het gordijntje op tussen 2 huisjes waar de eerste 5 kinderen hun schoolcarriere starten. En teacher Bridget en Elidah? Zij zijn er, nu 13 jaar later, nog steeds. Rotsen en branding!

In deze 11 jaar (de eerste keer dat ik naar Zambia ging was 7 februari 2014), zijn er hele mooie samenwerkingsverbanden ontstaan. Met respect voor elkaars culturen, gewoonten en gebruiken. Natuurlijk voor Zambiaanse gewoonten en gebruiken maar ook enige meer Nederlandse gebruiken hebben hun opgang gevonden (we hebben Zambian time and Dutch time bijvoorbeeld ;). Extra bijzonder is dat er samenwerkingsrelaties bestaan met mensen die al die 11 jaar als een bijna rode draad hun weg gevonden hebben. Het huidige hoofd van het Ministerie van Educatie (DEBS heet de functie) leerde ik 11 jaar geleden kennen. Toen nog in een andere functie binnen het Ministerie. Na een aantal promoties op plekken elders in het land is hij bij zijn meest recente promotie weer terug gekeerd naar het Ministerie in Livingstone. Als hoofd nu. Door de jaren heen hebben we contact gehouden en zo zagen we elkaar in oktober weer terug en pakten we de draad weer op.

Het Ministerie van Educatie is niet de enige samenwerkingspartner. Al vanaf het eerste prille begin werken we samen met Rabeccah en Kennedy Mukumbo van de NGO Dream Livingstone Zambia. Zij treden op als ambassadeur maar ook als vertegenwoordiger van Bouwstenen voor Zambia ter plekke wanneer wij er niet zijn, wijden ons in in de cultuur, gewoonten en gebruiken en helpen ons bij de strategische processen. We zijn elkaars sparringpartn ers en zij voeren de Zambiaanse (financiele) bedrijfsvoering m.b.t. de projecten voor de school en ondersteunen bij de bouwkundige processen en andere projecten. En daarmee zijn we nog zeker niet volledig. Waar zouden we zijn zonder Rabeccah en Kennedy van Dream Livingstone Zambia?

Ook de ZAPD (Zambian Agency for Person’s with Disabilities) is een organisatie waar we een samenwerkingsrelatie mee hebben. Niet alleen voeren zij het beheer over de Linda Blind Farm (huizen, land, community enz.) maar ze zijn ook de eigenaar van het land waarop de pre- and primary school en het handwash basin gebouwd zijn. Landelijk is de ZAPD misschien vergelijkbaar met een agentschap van een ministerie in Nederland. Aan top van de ZAPD staat de Director General. De Linda Blind Farm School in 2012 naar 2014 werd opgericht dankzij de niet aflatende inzet en volhardendheid van de toenmalige ZAPD-farm coordinator, Mr Thomas, en de toenmalige districtscoordinator Mrs Jane Munga. Nu nog steeds zijn de mensen die nu op deze functies op de Linda Farm werken, onze partners en hebben we ook contact met de Director General van het hoofdkantoor.

We werken samen met nog veel meer instanties en vooral mensen. Groot en klein(er). Zo zijn er ook een aantal mensen die echt voor Bouwstenen voor Zambia en voor de Xavier Community School een beetje de smeerolie zijn. Als het ergens piept, gaan zij hun licht opsteken en kijken of ze een duwtje in de goede richting kunnen geven. Dat is zo ontzettend helpend. Het netwerk breidt zich elke keer verder uit. Al die contacten doen we vaak samen met de head teacher en/of teachers van de school.

De afgelopen werkreis stond in het teken van de toekomst. Een duurzame toekomst voor kinderen die , met en dankzij al uw hulp en de hulp van al onze partners, echt bouwen aan een betere toekomst. En blijven bouwen aan een betere toekomst. Voor zichzelf, hun families, hun communities en zelfs voor hun land. Ooit zei Brian, hij was toen amper 5 jaar, gevraagd naar wat hij later zou willen worden: “I want to be the President of Zambia”. Anderen wilden piloot, verpleegkundige, farmer, computernerd of kledingmaakster worden. En van Martha weten jullie al dat ze hard werkt om hopelijk teacher te worden en dan wil ze heel graag naar de Xavier Community School.

Some dream’s can’t wait. Deze dromen hoeven, ook voor deze kinderen, niet meer alleen een droom te blijven. Dit werkbezoek stonden bijna alle overleggen in het teken van verder bouwen aan een echte toekomst. Een toekomst door vervolgonderwijs en door vakonderwijs.

Het voltooien van basisonderwijs is een belangrijke en grote stap voor de leerlingen van de Xavier Community School, maar daarmee stoppen de ambities van de leerlingen, hun ouders en de leerkrachten niet. Zo hadden we bijvoorbeeld besprekingen met het Ministerie en de ZAPD over de bouw van secundair onderwijs (middelbaar onderwijs). En waren er ook besprekingen over een plan om beroepsonderwijs aan te gaan bieden en dat dan in nauwe samenwerking met een Nederlandse stichting. Omdat de besprekingen nog gaande zijn, kan ik er nu nog niet al te veel over vertellen.

Een van de twee belangrijkste redenen om in november jl. nog een keer naar Zambia te gaan waren gesprekken met de ZAPD als landeigenaar van de Linda Farm over de bouw van de secundary school. De directeur-generaal van de ZAPD zelf kwam vanuit de hoofdstad. naar Livingstone voor besprekingen met het Ministerie van Educatie, de Xavier Community School, Dream Livingstone Zambia en Bouwstenen voor Zambia. Speciale dank gaat zeker uit naar alle Zambiaanse partners die hebben meegeholpen en naar iedereen die heeft bijgedragen aan de vele uren van waardevolle discussies die we hebben gevoerd. We zouden heel graag alle partners in het zonlicht zetten hier. Maar dan zou de blog wel heel lang worden en de foto’s een heel dik fotoboek vormen. Helaas, dat is eigenlijk onbegonnen werk. Het lukt ook niet altijd om iedereen tijdens een verblijf in Zambia weer te zien en te spreken. Maar onze dankbaarheid voor de samenwerkingen, voor alle hulp, voor de vriendschappen ook, is erg groot.

Building the future together means working together—literally. It means building trust, relationships, and tangible results. As partners, we join forces—both figuratively and literally—to create accessible, high-quality education for children and young people for whom this is not a given. And the children and young people themselves are also building their future by going to school with enthusiasm and giving it their all.

Over the past 11 years (since my first visit to Zambia on February 7, 2014), together we have established incredible partnerships—built on mutual respect for each other’s backgrounds, cultures, traditions, and customs. While naturally embracing Zambian ways, a few Dutch habits have also found their place (try the “Zambian time” and “Dutch time” :)).

It’s tradition to conclude meetings with a group photo, and I thought it would be fun to share some of these moments with you. Each person in these photos plays a crucial role in the Xavier Community School and our future plans. For instance, you’ll see local partners who assist with daily operations, a visit to a school with extensive vocational training experience, and even the delegation from the Director General of the ZAPD at the national level.

It all started small. Mr Thomas, a dedicated parent, played a key rol in those early days. His determination and belief in education laid the foundation for what exists today. And teacher Bridget en assistent teacher Elidah, who stood at the front of the class back then? They are still there, 13 years later, steadfast, unwavering, true pillars. Now part of a very dedicated team of school teachers, a deputy teacher and the head teacher.

One of the most remarkable aspects is that some partnerships have remained a common thread throughout all these years. The current head of the Ministry of Education in Livingstone (a position known as DEBS) is someone I first met 11 years ago. Back then, he held a different role within the Ministry, and after several promotions in other parts of the country, he recently returned to Livingstone in a leadership position being the head of the Ministry. We stayed in touch over the years, and when we met again last October, it felt like reconnecting.

The Ministry of Education is a highly valued partner. But it is not our only local collaboration partner. From the very beginning, we have worked closely with Rabeccah and Kennedy Mukumbo of the NGO Dream Livingstone Zambia. They act as ambassadors and local representatives for Building Blocks, stepping in when we are not on-site. They immerse us in the culture, customs, and traditions, guide us through strategic processes, serve as sparring partners, manage the Zambian (financial) operations for the school projects, and support construction efforts as well as other initiatives. And even that doesn’t fully capture the extent of their contributions. Where would stand without Dream Livingstone Zambia. I remember, like being yesterday, our first “official talk” on the benches in the garden at Dream. I was 11 and asking them to help building a real school. They just stared at me for a moment ;).

We also have a partnership with the Zambian Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD). Not only do they manage the Linda Blind Farm (including the housing, land, community, and employment), but they are also the landowners of the plot of the Linda Farm and therefore of the property where the pre- and primary school is built. On the farm, a ZAPD farm coordinator oversees operations, while the district and provincial coordinators manage broader activities at their respective levels. At the national level, ZAPD functions similarly to an agency under a Dutch ministry. Partner at the ZAPD Head Quarters at the national level is the Director General.

The Linda Blind Farm School, established between 2012 and 2014, owes its existence to the relentless dedication of the then ZAPD farm coordinator, Mr. Thomas, and the district coordinator, Mrs. Jane Munga. These individuals, along with their successors, remain valuable partners to this day, and we maintain close contact with the Director General at the headquarters.

Our collaboration extends far beyond these organizations. We work with numerous institutions and, most importantly, countless persons—large and small partners alike. Some people have truly become the driving force behind Bouwstenen voor Zambia and the Xavier Community School. They act as the vital “lubricant” that keeps everything running smoothly—whenever challenges arise, they step in, assess the situation, and help push things in the right direction. This kind of support is invaluable.

And the network keeps growing. Many of these connections are established in close cooperation with the head teacher(s) and other teachers at the school. Together, we continue to build a brighter future—one brick at a time.

Shaping the Future Together

Our most recent work trip was dedicated to planning for a sustainable future. Thanks to your support and the commitment of all our partners, we are supporting, most vulnerable, children build—and continue to build—a better future for themselves, their families, their communities, and even their country.

I remember Brian, who, at just five years old, was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. His answer? “I want to be the President of Zambia.” Others dream of becoming pilots, nurses, farmers, computer experts, or seamstresses. You already know Martha’s story—she is working hard to become a teacher and dreams of returning to the Xavier Community School to inspire the next generation.

Some dreams simply can’t wait. And thanks to your help, these dreams no longer have to remain just dreams. This work trip was filled with meetings aimed at building a real future—through secondary education and vocational training.

Completing primary school is a significant milestone for the learners of Xavier Community School, but their ambitions—and those of their parents and teachers—don’t stop there. For example, we held discussions with the Ministry of Education and ZAPD about constructing secondary education facilities. We also discussed plans to offer vocational training in close collaboration with a Dutch foundation. While these talks are still ongoing, we look forward to sharing more details in the future.

The Glimpse Behind the Scenes

One of those groupphoto’s was made after the meetings with the Director General from the ZAPD coming whole the way from Lusaka. Talks run about the secundary school to establish on the land of the ZAPD being the landowner of the Linda Farm.

But also special thanks go to all our Zambian partners for their invaluable contributions and to everyone who participated in the many hours of meaningful discussions. While we would love to highlight every partner here, this blog would become far too lengthy, and the photos would fill an entire album! Unfortunately, although we do our utmost best, it’s not always possible to meet everyone during every trip, but we remain deeply grateful for the collaborations, the help, and the friendships that make this journey possible.
